Frenulectomy

A frenulectomy procedure is performed to remove a fibrous tissue attachment between the upper front two teeth. A frenulectomy is most often performed after the space between the front teeth is closed orthodontically.  This procedure is performed using the Waterlase laser and topical anesthesia and is very easily tolerated.  Patients usually return to their daily routine the next day.

Another type of frenulectomy is the removal of the fibrous tissue attachment under the tongue.  Patients can be “tongue tied”, affecting their ability to speak or swallow correctly.  A strong lingual frenulum can also cause gum recession on the tongue side of the lower front two teeth.  A lingual frenulectomy is performed using the Waterlase laser and topical anesthesia only.  Patients usually can return to their daily routine immediately after this procedure.
