Every Monday afternoon and Tuesday we schedule time for new patient exams. I enjoy getting to know new patients and thought it would be interesting to share the most common responses I hear from our dental history questions. Most new patients report brushing their teeth 1-2 times per day and flossing 2-3 times per week. Most patients have had recent cleanings but few report long-term regular cleanings. Often a move or change in insurance benefits has disrupted the schedule.
The most common chief concern for patients referred for periodontal disease is “I want to keep my teeth”. Often, the patient’s Dentist is waiting for the periodontal examination findings to use to develop an overall treatment plan. A periodontal examination takes 20-30 minutes and provides a wealth of information. This information helps develop plans that allow each patient to invest widely in their dental care.
